Money

Money makes the world go round...if you don't know where yours is going, it's time to get a handle on that before you are any older.

It makes many women uncomfortable to talk about it, but money matters.

It is what will determine whether you have a comfortable retirement, a semi-retirement or you continue working long past what is a traditional retirement age.

It's okay if that is what you choose to do. But if that is what you are going to do because you have to, it's not much fun. Talk to someone who knows about money and ask question until you understand what they are talking about.

Understanding your financial situation will dictate the decisions ahead about your work life balance, where you live, how you live and the standard of living you will enjoy.

If you are saving for something specific, some basic money saving tips are always useful. If you are going to have to live on a strict budget, they are vital.

Do you have your retirement plan in place? Does it include sufficient variety to protect you from the ups and downs in the different markets? Diversification is important for long term stability.

While this website can supply some simple tips, personal money management and retirement planning requires the advice of a qualified financial planner. Ask question until you understand it completely. Many people find out too late that their funds are insufficient for a comfortable retirement.

Even at quite a late date, it's surprising what can be achieved with a sensible budget and a fresh point of view. At least then you will have a clear view of the options.

Even if you find you do have to work later in your life, you don't have to be doing what you are doing now. Seek out some options for creating your own 'portfolio' of work at Income in Later Life. There are plenty of suggestions that you can work towards to have a more independant income stream.

Once the retirement plan is sorted, there is still plenty to know about money and what it can do.

In 1984 the first fund to invest only in ethical companies via the stock market was launched; those companies that were both socially and environmentally responsible. It was called ethical investing, or socially responsible investing. It's now become so big, it's mainstream. As an example, some choose not to support those companies that make money from smoking, drinking, oil exploration or gambling. Consider the industries your funds are supporting and make a statement about what you believe.

Form an investment club.

Having a group of friends investing sums together makes for more powerful investment potential. Here are some simple guidelines to forming an investment group, but please be careful and have formal agreements in place for everyone's protection.

Bored with it all? Maybe it's time to GIVE IT AWAY.
