Perimenopause Symptoms
Experiencing perimenopause symptoms is the start of the menopause, when periods become irregular and you begin to feel those hot flushes! The terms
menopause
and perimenopause are often used interchangably but they relate to different points in the transition of a middle aged woman. Perimenopause symptoms start when periods begin to become irregular. You are still menstruating, even though the timing, flow and frequency of your periods may be changing. This is where you will first begin to notice hot flushes, night sweats, declining libido, mood swings and a host of other symptoms. Hormone production in your ovaries begins to decline or is fluctuating, causing these symptoms. There is no need to panic, but you do need to recognise that these symptoms of perimenopause are the start of the menopause for you and will continue for some time, generally several years, before your periods stop for good, which is when you are literally in menopause or the end of menses. Percentage wise, about 20% of women have no serious symptoms of perimenopause, about 20% have severe symptoms and the remaining 60% experience some symptoms. For the most part, treating yourself well with healthy food, moderate exercise and sufficient sleep will help you to manage this transitional period in your life. However, if you feel the symptoms of perimenopause are disrupting your quality of life, you should talk with your doctor. There are many safe alternatives to explore in both herbal and medicinal remedies over the short to medium term.
