New Year Resolution 2012

New Year resolutions are promises you make knowing that you will almost certainly break them. They are promises to yourself and you know that you can trust yourself, except when you can't. Even so, you'll understand, though you will be disappointed in yourself.

Is this the conversation you have with yourself every year? Me too.

This year 2012, taking hope over experience, I again promise myself that this year's resolution is to try to lose some weight. Not masses. Not going for biggest loser territory in 60, 80 or 110 kilos (okay, I would have actually disappeared and be well into negative territory if I lost 110 kilos) but I am aiming for a modest 5 kilos at a time.

Five of those units of 5 kilos lost would be brilliant, but (sorry, just pass me that last square of chocolate...no sense wasting it) I would settle for 2 or 3 or 4.

Five kilos doesn't sound as hard to get as 25 does. I am casting about looking for an eating plan that I can live with. It must be an eating plan and not a diet because we all know that diets don't work.

But they all say the same damn thing! Eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Well I would if I liked them. It's much harder when you don't. Can I take my fruit as wine and my greens as bitey cheddar cheese (the cow ate them green!) on a biscuit? No? What kind of fun is that going to be?

(Honey, just pour Mummy a gin and tonic while I write this article, hmmm?) So I am stuck with eating protein and some lettuce leaves I suppose. Delightful.

I feel better about the exercise half of the equation. I know I must move more and I am already ahead of the game with a gym membership. I haven't actually visited the gym in some time, but the membership is at least, active.

I just have to get there (and change with strangers, get sweaty, shower with strangers, pack my gear back and forth) oh never mind, I'm sure I'll do it. (Ha!)

Perhaps I should just Zumba in my bedroom? Not really enough room and besides, the seismic people are watching closely for earth tremors...best not to start anything there.

Oh well, the end of the first day of the year and I'm almost talked out of it already. But no, I will persevere. I'm going to the movies tonight and plan on having a big container of popcorn. At least it's from a vegetable. That's a start.

Any advice?

Breast Cancer; a personal reflection
My cousin died this week of this insidious disease. We need to know more.

Aging
Aging is a state of mind, just not mine at the moment. Will I get over it if I live to 100?

Young Men
A bit of fun around dealing with the inarticulate young men in your life. It is a very funny song.

Dysfunctional Families
There are at least 3 generations that have bought the Hollywood notion that perfect does exist in family life. I'm here to dispute that notion and declare dysfunctional as normal.

Tragedy
When tragedy seems so pervasive in the world, how to we remain optimistic?

Bug Out Bag
We live in uncertain times. It might help make you feel better if you have a bug out bag or disaster survival kit on hand to at least be as prepared as you can be.

Childhood
A fond wander through some fun memories from the past.

Hot Flushes for Science
Is menopause where nature meets global warming? A theory.

Poetry Month
I found a poem during Poetry month that just expressed so beautifully some of the heartache that is being experienced around the world and I had to share it.

Dream Come True
Remember the great musicals from the '60s? South Pacific was one of them and it had a truly great line of wisdom in it, perhaps from one of their most whimsical songs.

Cost of Commerce
Every action has a reaction. With prices dropping, retail changing and China on the rise, how can what we buy daily make a difference?
