Testosterone for Women

Testosterone for women to replace shrinking levels in middle age sounds great, but needs to be treated with extreme caution.

Although testosterone is considered a male hormone, women produce it as well, in small quantities, in their ovaries and adrenal glands.

However by the time a women is in her 40's, her body has about half the amount of testosterone she had in her 20's and this will continue to drop as her ovaries cease to produce hormones during perimenopause and menopause.

Testosterone is actually a steroid and is a wonderful hormone for women in small quantities. It promotes bone growth, which is an issue in middle aged women, it can help relieve mild depression and it will relieve vaginal dryness and atrophy which can make having sex painful. And given that lowered libido is a common complaint in middle age women, it will boost your interest in sex and improve the resulting orgasm. It can also have a beneficial effect on your brain, muscles and other major organs while boosting metabolism.

What's not to love?

Too much testosterone for women is a disaster, though. It can lead to facial hair, aggressive behaviour, baldness and severe acne, so getting the right dosage and monitoring it is an important factor for success.

Replacement therapy may be recommended if she is experiencing significant symptoms such as loss of libido, loss of a sense of well being, or fatigue.

Testosterone for women can be delivered in a variety of ways; as a tablet, by injections, as a cream, a gel, as an implant under the skin and as a testosterone patch. Not all methods are available everywhere and most have been developed for use on men.

There are very few cases where the actual need for testosterone replacement can be medically justified, given the side effects that can be experienced. There is also very little long term information on the side effects that may be experienced over time, so it is a drug to be used with extreme caution.
